Well the Divas/Friend survived another outing and we well received, but no one found a new housemate. However we do have a sideshow of the wonderful Faie African Art Gallery new location and we had a grand ole time. We shall have our annual show/sale a Hand Works Studio/Gallery in our new location this coming weekend on the 17th and 18th. We shall keep you posted and enjoy the sideshow.

Moving On Update.

The "Darling Divas/Friends" are moving to the east-side of Garfield Park and we have been busy packing, throwing away and giving away. It has been a long haul, but I lost my home to foreclosure, but we are moving to the "Switching Station Artist Lofts". Our new space is all about arts, actors, dancers, musician, painters, writers, etc. Creativity flows throughout and I'm excited about the possibilities of where this part of the journey called life is going to take me.

In 1999, the City of Chicago invited Artspace to determine the merits of a potential live/work project in the Garfield Park neighborhood on the city's West Side. The focus of the investigation was the Roentgen School, built in 1906 as a telephone switching station. With its high ceilings, large windows, and central courtyard, the Roentgen was an ideal candidate for Artspace's first Chicago project.

Four years and $5.3 million later, the Roentgen School reopened as the Switching Station Artist Lofts. The building wraps entirely around its paved courtyard, which serves residents as a private gathering place and a safe play area for children. Other amenities include off-street parking, a fenced-in play area on the building's sunny south side, and a lower level suitable for meetings and other events. Apartments on the building's upper floors afford fine views of Garfield Park to the north and the downtown Chicago skyline to the east.

Road Trips

It's been a while since I've posted, I've been busy with life, looking for a job to support the artist. It has not been a very successful journey thus far, but it's vending time. Last month we went out and there where no new collecters, plus it was also cold/raining.

I did however met with some other creative sister/friends and it was good seeing Steff (left) and Connie (right) from our old doll club. It has been more than two years and we've all made it to the next level. Connie brought along some of her friends and we all just had a great time catching up and breaking bread together.

This coming weekend (18th & 19th) we will be going out to the to the "7th Annual Lake Meadows Art Fair". This year they will be presenting "Her Legacy A Tribute To Dr. Margaret Burroughs". Dr Burroughs is the co-founder of the DuSable Museum of African American History and amazing artist We will be at: Lake Meadows Shopping Center, 35th Street and Dr. Martin Luther King Drive, Chicago, IL 60616 for 11am until 8 pm each day and if you are in the area, do stop by and say hello there will be plenty of good art, good music and great people. I hope to see you there.

Greetings All, Here's "Blondean" my latest "Diva". Blond is named after one of my aunts, who I thought as a child was the best aunt ever. She played with us, sangs to us, and she baked things that we loved. She was just like one of us kids, but just bigger. And yes this diva has on purple boots. I love making the boots and I have one more pair of purple boots to make, until all the purple vinyl is gone, so relax and enjoy. The rest of the group of "Darling Divas/Friends" are all excited about our outing this Saturday at the Walter Payton Cancer Fund annual 17th Crafts/Handmade event in Evanston, IL.

Meet Zuri

Greetings All, For the last two weeks I've been working on three divas at the same time, and here is my latest, "Zuri". Zuri is name in honor of those wonderful women of the "Zuri Quilting Circle" in Nashville, TN. According to Babynology, the name means sun princess and goddess of the the sun, in Japanese. In Hebrew it means "My rock" and I like that. It also means in Swahili, beautiful and that she is. She's dressed in an abstract print striped, drop-waisted dress. She's also wearing a purple wrapped belt and matching knee-high boots.

I would like for you meet my latest "Diva" Vashti who's dressed in a 2-pcs. satin pajama set under her silk robe with matching sandals. Vashti was the wife of King Ahasuerus and is mention in the Book of Esther of the Old Testament. In the Talmud from Jerusalem she is also and often viewed as an independent-minded heroine in the feminist interpretations of the Purim story and also called a villain. You decide, but you know that I think that she's a darling;-}

Well we've rested from our road-trip this past weekend, unpacked, and some of our Divas have moved on, while other are in the waiting room anticipating their up coming new journeys. Below is Eureka (left) and her new housemate Arlanda (right), they will be residing on the far south-side, and both are very happy with the arrangement. Don't they look like family?

Artist Carolyn Elaine of "Studio Elaine Mosaic" (below left) and I where just hanging out talking, when this brother approached us, and asked to take our picture, so I wanted one of the blog. Two Divas hanging out with the "Darling Divas/Friends";-)

I love taking pictures of people and when I asked them, they wanted to take their pictures with the "Darlings" and so I clicked away. My quilting sister/friend, Dorothy Burg (below) came by and I asked to take her picture, well she posed with Valentine Jones and Janira just laid back and swooned. Valentine is on her way to Georgia to reside with Stacey Brown.

I don't remember this lovely person (right) name, but I asked to photograph her and she posed with the the "Divas/Friends". I also know that this live diva was from the group that came from Columbus, Ohio called "Champagne & Grits Studio". They create wonderful wearable art. Notice her jacket/hat.

Akosua (below center) is in the waiting room waiting to move to Hazelcrest, IL later this year, Obadiah-servant of God, is on his way to Georgia with Joyce Lomax, and Sojourner is gone to Calumet City, IL to co-habit with her new housemates. The "Darling Divas/Friends" are on the move.

Meet Enoch and Road Trip

Greetings All,

Meet Enoch (below center), "a man that walked with God". I don't know why my latest male dolls have these biblical names, but I'm not shying away from them. Enoch was my first beard and it will not be the last. I love men with hair on their faces and I guess that it's showing here with Brother Enoch.

On Sunday I went to the "Walking To Success: An Anthology of Black History" celebration at Loyola Park Fieldhouse. I took several of the Darling Divas/Friends with me and you know that they where a big hit as always. I also got a proposal that "Sojourner" (left) and "Kadijah" (right) come to the city of Calumet, IL to live later this year and now they are hanging out in the transition lounge awaiting their departure.

I had two doll left in the group that I had cut/sewn, but had not stuffed or dressed and thought why not make them into men so "Rob", the only male that I have would not be alone. Greetings All,

This week's Darling Diva is Kadijah. She name after the television shows character Khadijah James on "Living Single" who was played by Queen Latifah. My Kadijah name is spelled different and I am aware of that. I should have looked before I signed her.

Kadijah is dressed in purple iridescence silk pajama's with matching slippers. She also has on a long vest of African Wax printed cotton and her necklace and earrings are made of glass beads that was a gift of a dear friend.

I shall attempt to create a "Diva" each week until I go out venting later this month and next. You know that I will post if I have anything to post and I still love watching Living Single. See you later and enjoy Kadijah.

Greetings All,

Saffornia (left) and Cece (below right) have found new house-mates and have moved on. Saffornia is now residing with Susan Trice on the south-east side of Chicago and Cece has moved to the far south suburbs to Olympia Field, IL with Cece and Preston Bowe.

I had dinner with Saffornia and friends at her new home and she just sat there so contently waiting for rooms to be prepared. She's such a diva.

Cece on the other hand had her had her house-mate to give me a call last night to say that she was very happy in her new home. I will get to visit later in the year and check out her new environment.

Here is "Eureka" she's my latest diva. I have been working on her for the last two weeks and she's finished. She wearing a garment that was created for an earlier diva who found a new home and that caretaker want her dressed in red/black. So I could not let a good outfit go to waste. I think that if fits Eureka better and I had not planned it that way, it just happened. She looks so serene sitting amongst the plants.

It's been a while, but I have been busy with my art quilt world. I have been able to complete two divas. Meet Cece (below) who's dressed in a hand dyed cotton jumpsuit pajama with long robe lined is the same fabric as the jumpsuit. She's also wearing matching sandals.

Below is Sojourner and she's wearing a pajama jumpsuit in black lace with a short lace matching shrug and sandals. I also added a sequince and rhinstone choker. These divas are lounging and enjoying their day and I hope that you enjoy looking at them.

Ethnic Arts Festival 2010

Greetings All,

Corinth (above left/center) got caught in the rain at the Ethnic Arts Festival and had to have a make-over (above right). This is the first time that I've been able to get close to copying one of my Divas and I think that I got pretty close. She was going on a go-see, but she didn't get chosen. Eunice (below bottom) however did get the call and is now living in Oak Park, IL with a wonderful artist Sylvia Hughes.

I think that I will create a new Diva using the head of the old Corinth and her name shall be Harlequin. I chose that name because her make-up looks abstract to me, but not like a clown and I love the sound of the word Harlequin. I will post pictures later.

Road Trip - 25th Annual Ethnic Arts Festival

The Darling Divas/Friends are getting ready for a road-trip this weekend. They are headed for the 25th Annual Ethnic Arts Festival in Evanston, IL. We will be there two days, July 17th & 18th from noon until 7 pm so if you are in town stop on by and say hello. There will great arts, foods, and people. Eunice (right) got a slip under her skirt for this trip. I got tired of people misunderstanding who she was and I gave Saffornia (left)the beach chair since she's wearing a swimsuit.

I traded Kameryn with Felicia Grant- Preston (Felicia and Ron with Kam left) earlier this year I didn't pick up my piece until last month and I forgot to post it. The piece I got in exchange is a mix-media one with painted canvas, cloth, paper, gold leaf, shells, and buttons. Plus it's framed and I am over joyed. I love trading with artists who love my work and I love theirs. Thanks Felicia and Ron.

I did some changes to Eunice (left) and Saffonia (right). Eunice got a slip under her skirt because I got tried of people getting the wrong impression as to who she is and Saffronia got the beach chair instead of Lark. So we are off of another exciting weekend.

We are still here and preparing for a road trip this weekend. We are attending the Lake Meadows Art Fair Juneteenth Celebration here in Chicago and it's going to be a hot one and I'm glad about that. I've only made one new "Diva" lately and that's Saffronia (right). She's making her debut this weekend.

Empress (left) found a new home with Stephanie Mader when we did the 57th Street Community Art Fair earlier this month and I brought home some of her lovely wares (below). We seemed to had a green theme going. I love the little frogs that she creates on her pottery.

Check out Magdalena new garments. This was the request of her new house Malyass Steele. This way she will match the decor of Malyass's home. I chosed red/black satin for her wrap dress, stole with black fringe, and sandals. Red crystal and black seed beads where used to create her necklace. She still looks just as sassy as before.

Jael (left) has gotten a new tutu, leotard, and toe-boots and in the morning she will be off to her new family/home. Then new collecter is a young lady who I met before she was born. I mean she was in her mother wound when I met mom and she's 9 years old now and is a dancer. I love this fact, I love the new garments (made at the request of the young collecter) and I think that she's even more adorable if that could be possible. I also looked up the meaning of Jael and found out that she was a worrier woman and is celebrated in bible prophecy. "Blessed among women" (Judges 5:24). Have a great life Jael and thanks to the Hightowers for adding her to their family.

13th Annual Cultural Connections African Marketplace & Bazaar

Well we are all refreshed after our first outing of the year. It was like a New Years celebration for me. Seeing old friends/collectors. The Divas/Friends where a smash hit with both males & females young and old. Some found new homes and are off on new journeys.

Kamryn is featured with her new housemates (left) Felicia and Ron Preston will be residing on the southside of Chicago and I know that she will enjoy being in their wonderful home. Felicia is a fabulous arts and I have her in my collections and will soon add a new piece.

Vibrant Velvet Jones (right) went off with Frank Frazier the noted artist who at the time was not sure when or where he was going, but he was taking her with him. Thank you so very much Mr. Frazier for your kindness.

Duchess (below) in all her gorgeousness went off to Georgia with Joyce Lomax of Jazzbon Creations for her mother and I have Joyces creations throughout my entire house and now I have new pieces to add to my collection of ceramics.

Philomena (left) found a new home here in Chicago with Ms. Cheryl D. Watkins. Jael (below center) is going to the southside home of Michelle Hightower who's daughter fell in love with and ask for only one thing to be changed and that is the color of her garments and we are working on that as we write. Marvelous Magdalena is going to Indiana to the home of Malyssa Steele and she too wanted to change the color of her garments to red/black to match her decor of her home and since she already owns one of my divas I could not refuse.

We had a wonderful time and I must start to create more Darling Divas/Friends for our next outing and I'll post pictures as they are completed. See you soon.

Next weekend (March 12th & 13th) we will be in attendance at the Cultural Connections African Market Place & Bazaar along with a host of others. Bittersweet

Greetings All,

Today is a bittersweet day for me thus far. I went class this morning and found out that my instructor Elizabeth Hughes died last night. This was a vibrant and energetic person who was also an awesome teacher. She will be greatly missed, please keep the Hughes family in your prayers. This was a shock and is the bitter part of my day.

The sweet part of my day that this is the birthday of my first born, Kemba Kazan Keen. This day brings back such memories as she has grown to this point of her life. I am so very grateful that she's my daughter and that I could not have asked for a better daughter.

Below is a diva that I created in honor of my real live darling diva and I've shipped her off to be with her namesake. I hope/pray these girls have a wonderful time getting to know each other. God bless and keep you Pooh on this birthday and all the days of your life.

We are still here and doing well. I'm in school taking medical billing/coding classes and Spirit (left) on her way to Lexington, KY to a new home. I'm still working on my latest Diva Saffronia and should have her completed by the end of the week. I'm looking for fabrics that I can dress her in that are in the yellow range. For me sometimes it's harder to dress them than to make them. I will post later, now I'm on my way to do some review homework before today's class.

Divas Furniture

I often look for furniture for my Divas/Friends and what I found is usually in the plant sections of stores. Here are two examples of items that I have use as stools.

Below are other examples that were found, but I couldn't see putting a plant on them, but the Divas look great.

In the past I did find some great doll furniture at discount store made by a company called Kingsgate, but couldn't find them on the web until now and can't wait until I can place an order.

Yes we are still here. We have been hanging out at Artisans 21 Gallery (above) and meeting all types of people.

Duchess (left) and the gang hosted our annual open house show/sale in November (above). I also finished Kemba, who is named after my daughter and Philomena (below right/left). I'm working on Saffronia in honor of Nina Simone song Four Women that I saw on You Tube sung by Lizz Wright, Dianne Reeves and Simone (Lisa Celeste Stroud) who is the high priestess daughter.

This is my latest diva "Fallon" who was created by commission and she's named after a wonderful young woman that I met on-line and who came out while we were at the Chicago Jazz Festival and spent the afternoon with us. We enjoy her company so very much that I had to name a diva after her. The garments that she's wearing were created by the owner fabric because wanted her to matched her bedroom.

The fabric came from "Global Mamas" that was created in Ghana and I supplied the lining fabric and shoe soles. Global Mamas is a nonprofit organization helping small women-led enterprises in Africa. Do check out their website. So here's to you Fallon.

Artisans 21 Grand Re-opening

Artisans 21 had their Grand Re-opening this past weekend and the Darling Divas/Friends were in attendance and had a great time. I was their all day Saturday met some wonderful people and some old acquaintances. I look forward to have a long run with the gallery and thank them for allowing me to be a member. Chicago Jazz Fest - Part II

Well the "Darling Divas/Friends" survived another weekend of vending and Ms. Pumpkin (right) found a new home on the east-coast in DC. She will be missed, but much loved in her new space/place. All the other divas were oohed and awed over and welcome with open arms. They met people from all over the planet, England, Ireland, Spain, China, South America, and Canada to name a few.

We had a great time hanging out with my first born, Kemba (below left) and she's a diva too. The music was just awesome, the weather could not have been better and I would love to do it again.

Seaway Bank Art Fair-Road Trip part II

The Darling Divas/Friends had a great time at the 26th Annual Seaway Bank Art Fair this past weekend. The met lots of new friends (left) and put on a great show. We also won second place in the fiber/doll category.

First place winner was Juliette Hurtz with her adorable little queens and her wonderful home decor (right). Juliette I have know for years and she's been a wealth of knowledge on how to be a vendor and I have learned a great deal from her.

The lovely little darlings (below) were presented by Charlie of "Pretty Things" and are creations of a doll maker named Judy Roy of "Child Images". I normally are not drawn to baby dolls, but I love the look of these cuties. Our next outing will be the Chicago Jazz Fest September 4th, 5th, and 6th and I will post more later in the month.

Well this weekend I will be out vending with the Divas/Friends at the Seaway Bank's Art Fair. This is a small community event that I love doing it because of the people and I always learn something new or meet someone new. I also it's not costly and I get the chance to expose others to what I do.

I started doing the event many years ago when my children were small and stopped of years and within the last 5 years I started back and remember why I did it in the first place. It's all about community. I don't live in this community, but there is such a feeling of community and I usully have a geat time.

Also this is the Air/Water show this weekend and the jets will be flying high and far even to the point that we can see some of them from 87th street. I completed several "Divas" for this event. I have parts of dolls that I have started so that when new events come up I can add to my inventory without a lot of stress. Below you will find Eunice (left), Corinth (center), and Magdalena. Artisans 21 Gallery

I just got back from Artisans 21 Gallery dropping off Rob and Empress and some of my small wall hangings to add to my inventory. Also I needed to do some paperwork. So now it's official that I am a member of the gallery. I'm so excited because I'm in such great company. Dorri Ellis, Joy Rosner, Candy Shweder, Janice Tedesco, Paul Jeselskis, Lynne Terr, Marianne Hammett, Jewell Pates, Lois Stone, Rob Borja, Barbara O"Connor, Harry Meyer, Anita Garrison, Pat Rosenzweig, Susan Windsor, Penny Nichols, Terry Boykin, Judith Guajardo, Jim and Chris Freeburn, Mary Ellen Sisulak, Anne Amas, Frazzled Tiles, and Donna Joy Wolfe.

Before I left I found earrings for two of my divas. Empress (left) and Pumpkin (right) and I love the way they enhance their features.

Empress (below) found a new friend with Dorri and I hope a new home soon. I know you ask how can I part with them. Well I want them to have lives of their own and not to stay with me forever. It's just like with my children I want them to grow and have lives away home.

I am amazed that the last past two months I met Jewell and Terry at different events for the first time and Anita I have known for years, but not at Artisan. Now we are all at Artisans. Life never ceases to amaze me and I thank God. This is going to be a good journey.

Empress (right) is my latest diva and she just found out that she and other divas/friends have gotten accepted into Artisans 21 Gallery in Chicago's Hyde Park neighborhood on the south-side of town. She's just awed and can't wait to get there and check out her new digs.

The Darling Divas/Friends had another road trip and are all back home waiting for their next outing August 15th and 16th at the "Seaway Bank 24th art fair". This is a community art fair that I have done for several years and it's like a mini- family reunion for me. I have come to realize that these types of events help to fortify me throughout the year because I get to see people that I see during this time of the year. Hey,

We were on the road last week June 18th & 19th at the State of Illinois Thompson Center in downtown Chicago, IL. The Illinois Artisan Program have what the call sprees and this was a 1st for us and we will do it again if we can. I met some wonderful artisans and saw some old friends and co-workers (below in the red tee-shirts), they along with others were protesting the budget cuts that the state is making with all of the social services that are needed. In the mist of all of the protesting came a young lady with a beautiful Peony that I just had to take a picture of.

I met an artist named Johanna Patricia Vargas and do go to her web site and check out her work. We have formed a mutual admiration society.

I love the design of the Thompson Center (below) and even when it rain and the rain comes into the building. There are small birds that have made their homes in the atrium and fly around at will. There is also tons of public art in this building so if you come to town and can please go a visit.

I love jewelry and these two were so very gracious and their jewelry was just so fabulous. La Vonne Nye (below) creates fine silver, gold, and bronze and uses vintage beads.

Lillian Cartwright was just a fabulous as her creations. She share so much of her knowledge about the sprees and her creations. Click on their cards or name to visit their websites or the artisan gift shop if you are in town. Some of the other artist that were involved with this event were John Ferguson, Colleen Feratier, Scott Fincher, Mike Nichols, Jewell Pates, and Karen Snow. Jewell is a member of Artisans 21 Gallery and this is one of the oldest cooperative art galleries owned and operated by 20 artists and artisans in the country. The Darling Divas/Friends have been kind of quite lately, but yesterday they went out to lunch with the LINKS. The Links, Incorporated founded in 1946, is one of the oldest and largest volunteer service organizations of women who are committed to enriching, sustaining and ensuring the culture and economic survival of African Americans and other persons of African Ancestry. The luncheon was held by the South Suburban Chicago Chapter at the Olympia Fields Country Club in Olympia Fields, IL. This was their "Hats On" luncheon, Art exhibit and scholarship celebration and the hats were on in full force. I truly enjoyed watching all the wonderful colors, styles and shapes of hats. I took so many pictures and I hope that you enjoy looking at all the beautiful birds on parade.

Well for the last two days the "Darling Divas/Friends" (above) have been on a journey. They had their 2nd Road Trip of the year at the "Cultural Connections" 11th annual extravaganza. This has been my 10th year in participating is this wonderful event. The Divas/Friends were on display and only "Maize"(below) found a new home and is on her way to Washington D.C. Everyone was on their best behavior and well received.

I love art/artist and I love the fact that they love what I do also. I increased by "Jazzabon Creations" collection below. I got a new cookie jar, tea pot and some gifts for family/friends. I also got a arty "Obama" mouse pad that I'm not sure if I'm going to frame or use and another ceramic wall tile.

Joyce Lomax of "Jazzabon Creations" got "Zenobia" (right) to add to her mother's collection and I grateful that Joyce and her mother love my "Darling Divas/Friends and thanks again Joyce. It was a good trade.

I went yesterday the the Bridges Gallery in St. Charles, IL to collect my divas/friends. Cree (left) and Jade (center) found new homes and Peaches (right) is on stand-by. I am glad that I had the opportunity to have them to be on exhibit and. Wednesday I took my first on the road trip. I did a trunk show/lecture at the Northshore Quilters Guild in Milwaukee, WI. They were so very kind and had great questions about my work. I had them laughing and crying. I'm looking forward to my next engagement. I took several of my "Darling Divas/Friends" (below) with me and they were also well received so much so that I was asked if I would be willing to come back and do a workshop and I am in awe.

For the last 4 days I've been at "The African Festival of the Arts". It's on of Chicago's largest events. The weather was great. The music was awesome and the art fabulous. This event for me has been like a family reunion. I see some people only once a year at this time and then there is always the possibility of making new acquaintance or re-establishing old ones. I learned a great deal during these times and will celebrate them for the rest of my life. Several of my "Darling Divas" found new home. Meron (above left)my first pregnant doll now resides in St. Louis, Missouri and Adiva (below right)is gone to Georgia.

I'm still here, I've been busy with my art quilts and not my The Divas. This past weekend I was out vending along with Gwen Boyd Mcgee. This was a first for all of us and we participated in the Evanston, IL "23rd Ethnic Festival". It was a two-day event and the 1st day it rain for a great part of the day and that was not a good thing.

In spite of the weather the race to Mackinac Island went on and it was a sight to behold with all the colorful sails blowing in the wind into the fog as the approached the horizon. "Thunderstorms and variable wind conditions welcomed sailors on over 430 boats to the start of 100th running of the Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac, presented by Lands’ End. The Race Committee started the first boats in the Cruising Division at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, and despite the variable starting conditions among them, all 23 sections were started on time. A large portion of the fleet was able to pick up 8-12 knots of breeze as they made their way out of Chicago".

Day 2 the sky was partly sunny and bright. The crowd was just as bright as the sun and the breeze off of the lake was delightful. I met to real live friends of the divas and promise them that I would write and post their pictures on my blog and I must keep that promise. Temamnesh and she was most charming.

I also promise to make a friend named after her and then she asked would I name one after "Lila Grace" also. I did tell her that I had name dolls by both of the names in the past, but I would create new Darling Divas/Friends because she was so delightful.

Greetings All,

I've completed several dolls that I had started a while back and I switch wardrobe with Skylar (left). I have a collector who want one of my "Glam Squad" dolls. She like the costume of Carmella (right), but she has blond locks and wanted her doll to have them.

"Perri" (left) was created to meet that client needs.

The newly dress Skylar (right) has on a lace long gown with matching panties and robe of duchess satin. I added a glass beaded collar and I'm not sure about slippers yet.

I have also finished another one of my dancer and this one is name "Ruby" (left). These dolls in this series are all named after gemstones and dress accordingly. She dose not stand on her own. I just thought it was more dramatic to have her standing and now I need to work that out, will it be a store bought doll stand or will I create one. We shall see.

Finally I competed my first pregnant doll "Meron" (below) who was inspired by Patricia Coleman-Cobb call a "Pocketful of Miracles". Someone asked if I had made this type of doll before and I had not, so this was a challenge for me. Meron is dress in silks of sand color (robe/bra) and a plaid silk for her pants. I'm not sure about her slippers and I have work to do on her navel.

New Family Members

I have been busy creating new "Divas" since all the other darlings are off to St. Charles. I'm going out vending this Sunday at the Helen Bailey's "Urban Livin' Spring Home/Garden Show. You may ask what or why would I go there? I'm showing my divas and art quilts there along with another fiber artist and since it is a "home" show some people will be looking to purchase art and accessories. So I hope/pray that some of the girls will find new homes. Also I will be doing a fiber art postcard demo.

My new family members are Skyla (above left) and Kamryan (right). Skyla is dress in silk duponi that is a wonderful shade of blue with and undertone of red. I love the iridescence of this fabric. She is wearing a long wrap robe with matching pajama pants and slippers. Kamryn is dressed in black lace. She wears a long tank top gown with a side slit and matching robe and slippers. I also created a cute lace panties.

The Divas/Friends are off on a great adventure in St. Charles, IL at the Bridges Gallery. Rowena Salas and Richard Sperry are the owners and they graciously invited us to participate in the Sisters Weekend. The girls looked like they were going to enjoy their stay. I did get a chance to finish Lark (right) with her painted green metallic boots. She sits in a blue toilel wing back chair. I even took the last of the "Glad Rag Klan" wire wrapped ragged dolls (below from left to right Pinky, Maize, and Limey). I also took a few small wall hangings. So I hope/pray that this will be a good venture for all of us. We are in great company at the Bridges Gallery. I will keep you posted.

The New Divas/Friends

I have been busy making new "Divas/Friends" getting them ready to make a trip to St. Charles, IL at the Bridges Fine Art Gallery. This will be their first trip and they will be a part of an "Divas" exhibition, April 11-13, 2008 for "Sister's Weekend". I'm so excited and if you are in the neighborhood do stop by and check out the gallery and Divas/Friends.

The Jones girls where the first to be created and they are Velvet (left) and Valentine (right) Jones. These divas are sisters and they love to being seen. Velvet is wearing a silk jumpsuit with a embroider organza duster with rhinestones and sparkles. Her hand painted gold slipper have rhinestone and beaded embellishment. Valentine is wearing a snakeskin printed long tank dress with side slit and a Kente Cloth woven duster that is satin line and she has a matching stole.

"Cree" (left) is my Native American inspired diva wearing a suede fringed dress with leather boots/belt. She also has a Mud-cloth stole and Pony bead necklace. She is seated on a Willow bench. I love Kathy's native doll from our of DJWHF meeting earlier this month and this is my tribute to her.

"Jade" (right) inspiration comes from just her name. I wanted to create a green eyed diva wearing green and Jade was born. S he wears a jumpsuit with matching long robe and she also has hand painted ballet slippers.

"Peaches" (left) like Jade it's all about the name and color. I keep a list of names for my divas and I look at that list for inspiration and create from there. Peaches wears a burnt orange long gown with side slit and matching short robe. She also has hand painted slippers and comes with her own chair that I've re-covered the cushions to coordinate with her garments.

"Spirit" (right) is dressed in a red satin jumpsuit that is backless and has an over skirt that ties in the front. I'm still not sure about her shoe as of yet. She also come with a chaise that I posted earlier and she looks just stunning laying there all relax.

The Darling Divas/Friends and been out an on display this weekend and some are no longer member of my family. It was great to see them go off to new places/spaces. They are going to the south (Georgia) and all around town in Chicago-land. I also got several commission for others dress in certain colors and one who shall be pregnant. Below are some of those that have deiced to go off on their own. I didn't get a chance to take my latest diva "Precious" picture, but she's out there sitting on the sofa in Karen's living room. I hope/pray that they are all enjoyed as much as I have enjoyed in their creation.

Wearables

A wonderful woman by the name of Michele Hardman has commission me to make some garments for her and I'm loving it because she dose not hem (smile) me in by sticking to just commercial patterns. I can cut and sew what I want with some freedom. I can dye the fabric and I can just be as creative as I can. I love the fabrics that she has chosen and I'm having a ball. Most of the garments are simple in their construction because of my love affair with the cloth and I want to showcase it, plus I love to see it flow as you move.

She bought some silk scarfs prints by Salvador Ferragamo in cream/taupe (center/right) and I dyed them in one of her favorite color turquoise (left). I made round neck tunics with side slits and cropped pants with pockets. I hope I can get a photo with her in one of these for my blog.

The next pantsuit with a long ankle length tunic/pants (left). This tunic has a slit neck line and long sleeve. I has an Moroccan flavor and I love the colors and the feel of the fabric because it drapes of nice.She bought several burn-out velvet and one was with a plume design in cream and I dyed it reds and oranges (right). I'm in the process of making a slip dress for her to wear under this dress or alone. The dress has a hankie hem line and the slip will be even.

This 3-pcs (left) was made with a poly/rayon print with embroider flowers/leaves that had a rag-edge on them that I chose to use the wrong side for the coat and with the v-neck tunic/pant I use the correct side of the fabric. Michele brought a Vogue pattern number V8268 for this ensemble.

This Southwest colored pantsuit is made of another lite weight silk and I created another long tunic with a hankie hem line with a asymmetrical neck . This will move as tho there is a nice warm breeze blowing around her and feel so very sensual. I have enjoyed this experience more than any other custom sewing project that I had thus far. I got some other fabrics in dye baths and need to go and check on their status and will post more later. Thank you again Michele Hardman.

Phantom Gallery Chicago

I've been busy getting ready for this month's "Phantom Gallery Chicago". I've been trying to make sure every things is labled and ready to be hung. I'm doing a group exhibition at a old established bank (ABC Bank) for "Black History Month" along with with Alpha Burton and Shirley Hudson, both are great artists and the show looks good in the old lofty building. The openning reception will be hosted by the Austin Chamber of Commerce on Febuary 6, 2008 from 6 to 8 pm and if your are in the community do come by and you can get more info from the Phantom's website. Below is my latest wall hanging. I compiled the second pieces of my "Smooth Jazz Clip-art" series plus one too create this larger wall hanging. I love the contrast with the black/white stripe and the overall affect of the piece.

I'm Still Here

I'm still here and I have been busy. I've made three new "Darlings" they are a part of a series that I've made in the past that people keep asking for. This times they are called the "Biker Babes" (below). I used some pre-printed faces that I got from one of my doll group members Nancy Garwon and I believed that it is some Virginia Robertson fabric. The Babes come with little 3-wheel carts and I re-painted the carts to make them more colorful. I also started a new series of dolls that are dancer. I've only complete one and that's Emerald (below). I will post more as I get them completed.

I've also been working on my art-quilting. Next month I will be a part of two exhibition. One is the 2nd Phantom Gallery Chicago exhibition. One exhibition is at the ABC Bank in the community that I live in and it includes two painters, Alpha Burton and Shirley Hudson. This is an Black History Month event sponsored by the bank and the chamber of commerce. The show runs the full month and our opening reception is February 6, 2008 from 5 to 7 pm at the bank. Check the Phantom link for more info. I will also be at the West Chicago Ave. Branch Library with an exhibition of my art quilts from February 11 til 15, 2008. Last Minute Gift Bazaar

This weekend and next I'm hosting a last minute gift bazaar at "Hand Works Gallery/Studio" (my home) and I'm excite to see how many people will stop by.
I'm pulling out all of my inventory (dolls, quilts, gourds, jewelry, and garments)and we shall see what we shall see. I did this a couple of years ago and it was ok. The best part is not having to pack up and haul everything to another location, set up, break down and haul everything back home. Most of the times I'm by myself and this diva is not getting any younger.

Greetings All,
I'm just checking in to see what's going on. I've not been busy with dolls this week, but I have been busy. Sunday I started out at a wonderful early dinner at a Art Space project called "The Switching Station Artists Lofts". The company was good and the food great. Later that day I was at a members reception at the Garfield Park Conservatory hosted by the Garfield Park Alliance. They were launching their new book about the conservatory titled,

Monday I worked with a small group of children at the Sankofa Safe Child Center doing fabric postcards (above). Tuesday I hung out with my mentee at Urban Circle Ministries drawing with oil pastels, and last night I was with a group of children at Youth Service Project, Inc. doing fabric postcards for the "2nd Annual Holiday Bazaar" that will be 12/21st and 22nd. I will post pictures later, but here are some pictures of their artwork (below).

Tonight I'll be going to and artist opening in Wicker Park. So far this week has been a busy one for me. I'm also having a 2-day "Last Minute Gift Bazaar"at my home on Saturday/Sunday. So what's up you dollies?

Opening Night for SWAQ

Last night was the opening night for the "Sew What Art Quilters" exhibit at "Spa Go" and we had a great time for our maiden voyage. I thank God for my girlfriends. They are the best. They have always supported me in what I do and I love them for it. Alpha Burton had a great idea with creating the "Phantom Gallery" and it was a great first night. I look forward today/night event. My members of SWAQ (Gwen McGhee and Sherise Marie Wright) were just as excited as I was and the owners of "Spa Go" were just ever so kind in letting us use their space for the gallery. Inspiration Golore

This past weekend was just full of inspiration. Juanita Yeager came to town for my quilting guilds 15th year anniversary celebration. Friday night we had a workshop with her and over 40 were in attendance. Saturday we had a trunk show and luncheon and my head is just so very full with creativity.

Juanita's quilts are just unbelievable. She showed a wide range of her work from the beginning of her career up until now. She was very informative and helpful. She has changed the way I will create my new masterpieces.

This is "Chicago Artist Month" and the "Sew What Art Quilters" are participating in what is called a "Phantom Gallery" where temporary galleys are set up in vacant store front. This is our duet showing and we are excited. We are in the "East Garfield Park" part of town, which is on the west-side of Chicago and we are in a new space called "Spago" at 2444 W. Madison. Its a spa that dose both in-house services and out. Can't make it to the spa, they will come to you. I love the concept and them offering us the use of their space. We will be in this space October 12, 13, 14, 2007 from 4 pm til 8 pm each day and if you are in Chicago do come by and see what we are doing and to say hello.

This morning put the finishing touches on several piece for this event. I added two more piece to my smooth jazz series. Here are "Trump I & II (left/right) and from the scrape of "Mother Fire" I created a new piece titled "Zig Zag - I" (center). This is beginnings of a new series.

I also finished another piece that I had started when I doing the "Wedggies" and it's called "Jacob's Ladder" inspired by looking at Sonji Hunt's blog this morning. Sonji is so very creative and cutting edge. I just love her work and I'm continually inspired and renewed by her. Last night I went to the Garfield Park Conservatory, Niki Nights where Niki Saint Phalle sculptures are on exhibit and they Garfield Park Alliance hosted an event where local artists Raymond Mays and Michael Lane were featured. Also jazz great Kahil El'Zabar Quartet. It was a wonderful night.

Hey,

I have been busy, but not with my Divas. I don't know what's happening with me about the dolls. I'm in a creative slump. I have a group of queens that went to Indy and they've not come home yet. They didn't sale and they only got a few inquires. I think that I'm missing them. It's not like when they are sold, I know that they are not coming home, but these are just out there. One of my friends did go and pick them up from the gallery where they were, but they are still not home.

I've been working on my wall art and have done a weekend of vending with the "Nubian Quilters Collaborative". We get together once a year and create blocks of a quilt that we donate to "Africa House International". That was as interesting as always and we will produce another quilt for such a wonderful cause.

I have started a new series of what I call my "clip-art pieces". They are all small and they are all about musicians. I find different images in my "clip-art" files. I'm using my hand dyed fabrics (silk and cottons) and dyeing more as often as I can. I'm loving it because I can complete one small piece in a day.

I also started a series of pieces that focus on the elements and these are larger works. Behold "Earth and Wind" (left/below). Fire is on the sewing machine as I write. They do have faces like I create on my dolls and also have hair. This is as close as to creating one of my darling divas as I have gotten. I don't like being in a slump, but this is were I'm at for now.

I also created another piece of an exhibition that I want to enter. It's something new in the sense that I used some window screen material as a part of my fabric selection. The titled of this piece is "Lost and Found" (below). It's inspiration comes from the "Lost Boys of the Sudan" and the young men/boys that I see in my city standing on corners.

Greetings All,
I've been MIA lately because my dad got sicker and died. It has not been as trying as I thought it would be. Now I know that he's out of pain. He had prostrate cancer that had spread and had to have a Cather put in place and he was in a great deal of pain. He also had Alzheimer which didn't make things any better, because he could not understand all things that were happening to him. He was 82 years young and had live a pretty good life up until the last two years when things started to go the other way. He has been missed because of the Alzheimer, we couldn't talk like we use to or go and hang out. This photo is one of the last ones that I have that we were hanging out together at a jazz fest that I was vending at. He had a ball for getting so much attention and know that I was a "real artist". Dad thank you for the wonderful comment and you will be missed, but do rest in peace.

Hello,
I have not forgotten y'all. I've been very busy. I have been going to the hospital to see my dad and he's not doing so good right now. Yesterday a met with the hospice nurse because that will be the next step. I've not been making dolls, but I have been making wall hangings. I find more comfort in doing them at this time. At the left-"Step On" and at the right "Summer Solstice Celebration".

I have all these doll heads/parts but no completed dolls other "Sparkle" (left). She was my last month challenge for DJWHF-club and yesterday I missed the meeting, so I'm feeling a not complete at this time. I can't wait until they post photos of the meeting.

"The Breakers" (left) is my latest piece. I have fell in love with creating small works. Pieces that I can create in a day. This one is all hand dyed and machine quilted. I love the colors. The cotton sky/sea are dyed by me and the rocks is a recycled rayon that was given to me by a good encourager Bernice Gardner.

The next piece is titled "Three Rivers" and it was named in honor of Walterine Keen who is a ex-sister-in-law who was very kind to me/my children. I was thinking about her/her husband and their farm and the town of "Three Rivers". This was all so very long ago and rows upon rows of crops. The hand dyed sky/waters are the same cotton fabrics in both pieces. The green silk was hand dyed by Marion Anderson and then over dyed by myself. These small works give me such a since of accomplisment and satification at the end of a day. They are simple in their construction, but it's all about the color for me in this process.

Here are the pictures of my latest piece titled "Monk" in honor of the one and only Thelonious Monk. I have had a great time creating this piece. I used my own hand dyed cotton and silk for this piece. I also fused the back of some of the silk with "Wonder Under" and printed the images of the drummer and the sax player from clip art on my PC. This process was a first from me but not the last. The musical notes I drew free handed and applied all to the background. I love the pink to blue coloring and the combination of fabrics. Enjoy.

I did get a group of Diva heads together and I'm on my way to the studio to start on their bodies and will post later on their progress.

I've been neglecting my "Darling Divas/Friends" lately. I've been focusing on my new part-time job. This is something that I have never done before so for now it very interesting. However I have done several small works. " The Water Woman" (left) is one of my latest. Also the "Green Wedgie Simple" (below). I also have a large piece that I'm working on that is devoted to "Monk" and I'll post photos later. I do have a group of heads for my new Divas and I'll work on bodies later.

Monthly meeting of PAQA

Greetings All,
Today was my monthly meeting for PAQA and I'm always glad that I can make that meeting. I come away inspired, encouraged and renewed. It's one of my monthly fixes. Today I saw so many wonderful creations and one in particular I was glad to see way by Judy Coates Perez "Arbol de Vida" (left). I love Judy's work because it is so very cutting edge. She paints whole cloth and then quilts them to perfection and this piece will be seen in the "International Quilt Festival in Huston, TX later this year. Judy's work is also featured in "Quilter Newsletter" and "Artella".

She is just awesome. I was also glad to meet Casey Puetz (right). I got some wonderful advice on some of the piece that I took for and some good comments. I love being a part of this group and I thank them so very much for their input. I also would like to thank Dr. Carolyn Mazloomi for suggesting that I check out some of the groups in my area. Also Casey purchased a small piece of mine and that made my day (left). Last month Sandy Schweitzer got a small piece from me also and gave me so very valuable advice. The fact that these artist who teach and exhibit all over the world would buy a piece from me means a great deal to me and I'm greatful.

I also got some great advice from Judy Zoelzer Levine, Sharon Malec, Lois Jarvis, and if I forgot anyone I'm so sorry, but all I can say it this is an awesome group to belong to. Thank you PAQA and Dr. Mazloomi. Four of my small works (below) are off the be on exhibit I hope in a Champlain headquarter thanks to Michele Hardman who is volunteering for this person. More info to come later once it's been confirmed. It was a great art quiting day and worth the ride. My cup running over.

Well today I started off changes more names. I've come to notice that if I have not signed my dolls or pieces that I'm subject to change their names. Citrine today became "Queen Zambia"(below left) and I signed two other dolls to fit into my "African Queen" series. Queen Niger (below center) and Queen Ashanti (below right). These queens are on their way to Tennessee for a Heritage Festival with one of my best friends Pamela Tabor who has relocated there. I hope and pray that they find new kingdoms to reign.

The Adventure of the Butterfly Princess

I thought that I could leave the "Butterfly Princess" along, but I had not signed her and I couldn't. I kept her on the table and every time I went by I check her out and last night she morphed into an angel named "Lovey" I like her much more. What do you think? I also completed my doll from Nancy's challenge for this month's "Dolls Just Wanna Have Fun" and I still have to create her face, hair, and dress her. She's my first doll that can stand alone and she's also kind of stocky, but she will stand. I'll post photos later.

Garfield Park Conservatory Market Place

Yesterday morning I spent a couple of hours at the Garfield Park Conservatory (above) on Chicago's west side. They have a seasonal market place there and the director Lavette Haynes, of the WSCAC Village Gallery asked me if I would put some of my wall hangings in the community gallery. There are artists/craft-persons from throughout so that there is a variety of different type of items (paintings, sculptures, candles, handmade bath salts, etc.)

There is also an exhibit of mosaic sculptures (left) by Niki de Saint Phalle in the conservatory titled " Niki In The Garden". These are just awesome and if you are in Chicago from May to October 2007 do come out and see them and what's going on at the market (right).

Greetings All,

I've been busy, but not with my "Divas". It's been a tree thing. I can't stop making wall hangings of trees. Below left "Lone Tree", center "Harriet Gone Up Yonder", and right "Desert Trees". I don't know what this means but I've been having a good time creating them. All of them have some of my hand dyed fabrics in them.

I also finished two of my "Ritual Dancers" (below left and right) by appliqueing them to small wall hangings and one more tree theme piece titled "The Other Side of The Creek"(below center). I don't think this is the end of my tree thing, but I do know that I've missed the "Darling Divas" so for the next couple of day it's just me and the girls.

Hello,
This week has been a slow week for creating. I finish my first doll will a head you can turn 360 degrees and now I will dress her. I completed my April challenge for SWAQG (left) and matted two small works.

This week I found out that my dad's cancer has spread to his left hip which has impaired his walking and yesterday I had to take him to the doctors in a wheelchair. This was sad for him, because he's been such an active man for 82 years. I didn't think that he understood what had happen until we were going home and he said "I guess this is what it will be for the rest of my life". My dad also has Alzheimer/Dementia, one doctor said it one thing and another said it another. The sad thing for me and my dad is that we can't talk like we use too.

This is me and Mr. Mabry Williams aka dad at a Father's Day Jazz brunch last year. He use to love him a "cold one" (beer). I knew that on the ride home something had changed, but I wasn't for sure. The next month he was diagnose with having the beginning stages of Alzheimer and so the journey began.

I've busy trying to wrangle up a steady income. I tried a home show and didn't reach my goal, but I did make some. I also made a new series of wire wrapped dolls and a two more of my "Gemstones" (below). I have added to my queen series meet "Queen Ashanti" (left).

"Dolls Just Wanna Have Fun" monthly meeting was a very informative session and these ladies never fail to impress me. Nancy's doll (right) for this months challenge was just great, even tho I didn't cut mine correctly. She also brought along Pegasus (left) who is fabulous.

Carol brought her "Ritual Dancer" (below right) and she was another great addition to our monthly challenges. Stef brought along two adorable little ones.

Well yesterday I only go Ms. Citrine partly dress. I created her a silk skirt and head wrap, a "Mud Cloth "top and stole and added her beaded collar. I still have her shoe to make and to paint her toes and fingers. I did however go to a friends house to collect a bag of dolls that were created by an aunt over thirty yeas ago. They are rag dolls that all have hand embroider faces with rug yard for hair. I love the impish expression and the detail to their clothing. My job is to restore the clothing if I can't clean them and to do some small repairs to the body. I would like to try and clean the bodies also and one of them is not dress so I'll try on him first and it that dose not work I just stick to their clothing. They appear to be stuff with small piece of foam and it's breaking down. So we shall see. The gourds I have broken the arms of two of them and now I'm trying to come up with another method of making them. I have started painting one with the broken arms and the one that I created the arm by using wooden dowels is alright.

Well I've been busy trying new things. Monday was a "Gourd" day. I started trying some of the air drying clays that I had bought last year along with some of the gourd that I've collected over the years. I've been inspired by Patricia C. Boyd, Sherry Goshon, and Terri Moisan. Who all make just unbelievable gourd sculptures/dolls. I tried several products. One was "DAS Modeling Material" (left) and this for me is too heavy. My first piece broke and "Paper Clay" (below) and this worked better because it was lighter in weight when dried.

Tuesday was a wire armature day and I made 5 of those and today I will be dressing cloth doll the last of the "Glam Squad" (phase-1) and maybe some painting of the gourds. I also want to try wrapping some of the armatures I made yesterday in the style of "Paverpol" which is a textile hardener. I love some of the sculptures that I saw on their web site and until I can get some of the products I will improvise.

The Darling Divas are on a road trip to Indianapolis at a wonderful gallery called "Kuaba Gallery". Met Jayne During the owner this past week. She had met a couple of the divas at the home of Robin/James Napier and wanted to me their creator, so an introduction was made. Jayne gallery "showcases a contemporary collection of artworks" and she's a respected authority on Zimbabwean sculpture. She is also the founder of an orphanage in Zimbabwe and another in Ghana. It was good meeting her and I look forward to a long/bless relationship. Please visit her web site.

Yesterday was an art quilting day and that's how I spent the entire day. I completed a wall hanging and then I cut it up and restructured it by stagnating the pieces when I re-assembled it. I love the way the pieces connected to each other. I use my hand dyed fabric with another one I bought and a batik that I thought complimented each other. I quilted the piece with variegated thread which added to the texture. I hope that you enjoy it as much as I did in making it.

This morning I'm trying somethings new. I painted the original fabric that was on a bench/jewelry box for Ms. Aventurine to match her garment. Mainly her silk gown and I love the way that it came out.

I new cushions in a chair for Ms. Carnelian and she appears to be most satisfied. Then I created an armature and masked off areas to paint my first gourd sculpture which is inspired by Patricia C. Boyd and Terri Moison. Thus far this day has started out very productive.

Vending day 2

Well it turned out to be a great weekend for the "Darling Divas/Friends" so many found new assignments and went off to wonderful girlfriends. "Queen Mali" is reigning in a different land where she will not be a stranger. "Inky" from the "Last of the Rainbow Klan" (left) has a new home and I found out that one of her relative is already there waiting for her with open arms. I also learned that some people like to hang them on the walls so I shall come up with a new doll or revise my "Wall Flowers" which where my first dolls that I made. I learned even more that the glamorous divas where the most popular so there will be a new series title the "Glam Squad" and you will see more of them to come later this month.

I did sell several of my wall hangings and one lap quilt. I did more trading with other artists this time than ever before and I have some wonderful new items to add to my collection and home.

Joyce Lomax and I did such a great trade that I have to

share photos with you. I got mugs, a vase and a bread plate (above). Joyce got a small wall hanging (left) and Ms. Mercy (right). Last year Joyce and I traded work and we both where very happy with the exchange.

Deborah Shedrick of New York and Atlanta we traded a quilt called "Chi-Town Viney Wine" (above center) for one of her great giclee print that will grace my home.

Stacy Brown of Hot-Lanta also traded with me for one of my garment, which I didn't take a photo of for some of his water color prints that will be given away as gifts. My last trade or collaboration is with Malika Jackson on of the coordinator of the "Cultural Connections" which is the name of the event where I was vending at this pass weekend. She is the art teacher at the Dixon Elementary School where this event was held and she's a very talented artist in her own right. I also have several of her piece in my collection and this new wooden sculpture is pure joy with it's two sidness. We will also be working on so art dolls together. I will create the bodies and clothing and she will create the faces. More to come as the saga unfolds.

Vending

Greetings All,

Well yesterday was my 1st day of vending for this weekend and the "Divas/Friends" were a great big hit. Queen Angola (right) has found a new community to rule over with her royal self. Also Queen Mozambique (left) has left the palace and is ruling a new territories. Queen Mali (center) is waiting for her new assignment. These are just three in my series of "African Queens". We hope/pray that they may live long.

There were new homes found for Ms. Mercy (right) who is one of the "Blessing Sisters" she will be going to Georgia and I'm not sure what city. I know that she will be well received there. Everyone loved her red silk jumpsuit with matching slippers and her flowing African printed robe. Only her sister Ms. Favor (left) is left alone. Ms. Grace (center) found a new home at the "Sherman Elementary School Heritage Festival" last February and I saw her new girl friend yesterday and she told me she's a delight to have in her home.

The "Soulful Strings" are also off too new destinations. The trio had split last summer when there sister Sable (left) found a new home at the "Lake Meadows Art Festival" and this time it was Sepia (center) and Sienna (right) turns. Let the music play on. Well I'm off to see what happens today with the Darling Divas/Friends and I'll keep you posted.

5th and final week at the "Open Studio".

Well this is the end of this journey and an interesting one it has been. Today I had more people to come in than any other day and most were men which I found very surprising. They were asking about the dolls. They thought that they were great and that their wives, bosses, and girlfriends would love them. They bought none, but I did sale one of my "Dream Keepers". Eartha is her name and she's found a new home with Sonja. This made my day and I also started a another wall hanging for my "Color Play" series. Tomorrow I will go back to the studio a pack everything up and bring home to sort for my next vending event.

PAQA-Water Challenge

PAQA-Water Challenge is on display at the Fine Line Art Center in St.Charles, IL. Show runs form February 26 until April 2, 2007. This challenge was brought to the group by Frieda Anderson fiber artist/author/teacher. "In the PAQA tradition of encouraging our members to explore new territory, the eighth PAQA challenge explores WATER. The requirements were simple. The quilts had to interpret "WATER", be no larger than 18" per side and include a self portrait." I am excited about being a part of this group of wonderful and talent artists and grateful to be in this exhibition. I pieced various shades of blue fabrics (cotton and satin) and then I overlaid polyester sparkling organza and machine quilted this piece. After which I cut open some of these quilted areas and machine washed/dried the piece. After washing I squared up the piece and bound the edges and finished it off by adding glass seed beads.

4th Week - Open Studio

This pass week was warmer and more people came by the studio. I also got another piece done which will become another series of pieces titled "Color Play". They will include my hand dyed fabrics as the back-grounds, variegated threads and some type of ethnic prints (African, batiks, etc,) They will be heavily quilted to add more texture and color. The one thing that I have enjoyed about this experience has been being able to get new works done and the influence of an environment that is different from where I normally work. Would I do this again? I'm not sure that I would. It was like working in a fish bowl and sometime that can be distracting.

3rd & 4th Week - Open Studio

I'm coming to a close at the "Open Studio" I have two more days and it's over. I has been very interesting thus far. On this past Tuesday I completed a new work. It's in my series titled "Urban Bush Mask" and this one is number four. This one is all about the color. I chose green because I'm looking forward to the spring and when I think spring I think green. Even tho we had all that snow on the ground. But today there is a lot less snow. I've not be creating any dolls during my time in the studio because I was asked as a quilter to exhibit/reside. However I have been working on them at home and will post later this week. The doll have been the drawing point to the studio. On this pass Tuesday more people came in and I have a couple of them that said they would be back to purchase, so we shall see.

I did get another piece completed this week. My daughter had requested a wall hanging with a mother coming her daughter hair and so I created "Please Hold Still". I used some of my hand dyed fabric along with some photo transfer of my children as little one and I included a picture of my grandchildren. The fabric that I used for the mother's dress is actully an African Wax print from one of my garment that I had made when my children were younger. This was a true labor of love.

The "Stitching Salon" has been such a big hit at the tourism center that it's been extended for another month so if you are in downtown Chicago stop by and check out all the great art and join in the knitting project/demo that are going on.

Week 3 in the Open Studio

Well this week is over and the fish bowl continues. It has not been as cold and I've learn how to substitute the heat. I've been able to work and I've completed a piece that I started in 2004 titled "Mommy and Me". I have also started a new piece for my daughters Kemba's birthday next month. The piece that I'm doing for Kemba is along the same theme of "Mommy/Me" and I love what's happening with it thus far. I did however sale one of my small wall hangings with week and a postcard. The piece that I sold is one in a series of pieces called "Wedggies". They are piece that I make and then cut up and reconstruct. I got this inspiration from Sonji Hunt who's work I just love and when I saw one of her piece where she had done the cutting/reconstructing I was wondering if I would be able to do so. My pieces are not as detail as hers but I think I can go further on the next attempt.

Here the picture of the one that I did do and it's call "Red Wedggie". Patrick McCoy who's a collector/supporter of the local artists community is the new owner and he also purchased one of my postcard. He was amazed that you could mail them without an envelope and that they would go thru the mail. I hope/pray that his make it to it's destination. No new dolls/divas this week only accessories for the "Dream Keepers" and a possibility of "Aurora" finding a new home. I will know more about that later today. I'm doing a Chicago Park District's Area 1 annual celebration of African American History "Umoja" event where I'll be vending for the first time pulling out all my goodies (dolls, garments, gourds, pillows, quilts) for show/sale. I hope/pray that all goes well. A lite snow is falling now so we shall see. I will take pictures and keep you posted.

Textural Rhythms: Constructing the Jazz Tradition

Last night was the opening for Textural Rhythms: Constructing the Jazz Tradition exhibition that I'm a part of in Columbus, Ohio at the Kings Art Complex. I'm so very glad to be a part of this awesome exhibition and if you are in the area please go/see the show. Also you can check our Sonji Hunt's blog she is also a part of the show and was there for the opening. She has photos and comments.
